Every year on the first Friday of June, people in some countries, especially the United States celebrate National Doughnut Day. It is a kind of food celebration to mark the history and cultural significance of this sweet treat.
National Doughnut first came into existence in 1938 to honour the contribution of Salvation Army Lassies, a group whose sacrifices are not known by many.
Salvation Army Lassies are the women who served doughnuts to the soldiers during World War I. Their main aim was to boost the morale of the soldiers who were constantly fighting for their country in the most horrible conditions.
To celebrate this food holiday, most of the bakery and coffee shops in the United States offer free doughnuts to their customers. Some shops even prepare doughnuts of different flavours and designs to honour the day.
With the rise of social media, people also share various photos of their favourite doughnuts along with hashtags. Some groups even run contests with exciting prizes to promote the importance of the day.
The day is a joyful celebration which brings people together from all over the world by indulging in this most loved pastry.
Though National Doughnut Day is a sweet celebration; one cannot forget the backdrop behind the origin of this day, which is war.
Doughnuts were served to those soldiers who were on the front lines during World War I. The soldiers were compelled to leave their families and had to fight in the most brutal conditions without food for days, resulting in both visible and invisible scars.
Those who managed to return home suffered from psychological trauma and physical disabilities, completely failing to live a normal life afterwards.
The damage caused to the soldiers even took a toll on their families. The women lost their husbands and their children were left behind without a father figure, creating an irreversible void in their lives.
We have all read and acknowledged that war is never the solution to any problem. But even so many years after World War I & II, it is a sad reality to see that countries are still fighting for power and influence.
The recent conflicts between Russia and Ukraine as well as Isreal and Gaza have again proved that it is the soldiers, their families and innocent people who had to endure the unimaginable sufferings as a result of war.
We think that in addition to enjoying doughnuts to celebrate the day, we all need to understand the ongoing humanitarian crisis and play a small part in contributing whatever we can to the needy, including the refugees, disabled persons, those living on the streets and war survivals, just like those women did years back during the World War I.
